Bottlenose Dolphin
Tursiops truncatus
Tursiops erebennus

Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin is a coastal dolphin from the eastern United States. It stays close to shore instead of roaming the open ocean.
It lives close to shore, in bays and estuaries (where rivers meet the sea), along the US coast from New York to Florida. It may also share waters with related coastal dolphin groups in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, but this is not yet confirmed.
Its common name honours Tamanend, an 18th-century chief of the Lenni-Lenape people, chosen with input from the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation near where the first specimen was found in New Jersey in 1865. Its species name, erebennus, may nod to Erebus, the Greek god of darkness, after that first specimen's dark colour.
