Scartella cristata

Molly Miller

About

The molly miller is a small, shell-dwelling blenny that watches the reef from the mouth of a borrowed shell or rock crevice. It reaches up to 12 cm.

Length
12 cm
Depth
up to 10 m

How to tell it apart

Combtooth blennies like this one look similar at a glance; the molly miller is told apart by a row of short, comb-like fringes running along the midline of its nape, just behind the head.

Appearance

Its body is mottled tan, white, and black, with dull green to olive dark bars that run down onto the lower part of the dorsal fin, the fin along its back. The head carries short, hair-like fringes and two large eyes.

Habitat

It lives on shallow rocky shores and coral reefs from the surface down to 10 m, sheltering in rock holes and gaps between algae.

Did you know?

This blenny often makes its home inside an empty queen conch shell rather than a rock crevice.
