About

The incognito goby is a small fish that lives on the seabed. For a long time, scientists overlooked it. It hides among the tentacles of the anemones it shelters in, so it is easy to miss.

Depth
up to 12 m

Habitat

This goby lives on the seabed in shallow coastal water, down to about 12 m. It stays over mixed ground of sand, gravel, cobbles, boulders, or bare rock, often covered with short algae or seagrass. It often hides among the tentacles of the snakelocks anemone, ducking inside when in danger. Young fish tend to stay close to sea urchins instead.

Did you know?

Its name, incognitus, is Latin for 'unknown'. For years, people mixed up this goby with a close relative, Bucchich's goby, until scientists finally told the two apart.
